In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, The Museum of Modern Art presented the most comprehensive exhibition of Picasso's art ever shown in the United States.
PABLO PICASSO: A RETROSPECTIVE was on view at the Museum for a four-month period from May 1 to September 16, 1980. This landmark exhibition consisted of over 700 works in every medium in which the artist worked—painting, sculpture, ceramics, theater and costume design, drawings, and prints. Generously lent by private and public collections from all over the world, these works span the long creative life of this master, generally acknowledged to be the most central figure of 20th century art. This edition is special because it contains a signed letter by John F McGillicuddy attached to the first page, see photo. Nearly 800 carefully selected works are illustrated. 208 of them in color-paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, collages, ceramics. They encompass the entire span of Picasso's life and the effortless reach of his creative spirit. A Picasso chronology introduces each section of pictures, accompanied by additional documentary and reference photographs, both of works or art not in the exhibition and of studio and personal scenes. 463 pp.; 758 illus. Published in 1980 and edited by Jane Fluegel, this rare book from MoMA Publications is available in extremely limited quantities.
